Non-stop football! The Ducks play at Penn State on September 27 in a re-match of last year’s Big Ten Championship (Reminder: we won). Normally it takes three flights to get from Eugene to Happy Valley, but the UOAA has chartered a direct flight to make the travel easy. Board our plane for this marquee game on the fall schedule!

This Thursday is Ducks Give, the university’s annual day of giving, and we hope you’ll support current students from across the country by making a gift to your local chapter’s scholarship fund. The UOAA will match the first $3,000 donated to each of our UOAA scholarship and internship funds. There’s no better time to donate. Go Ducks!

The power of the Duck network

As new college graduates transition into their careers, many face challenges navigating job searches, adjusting to new work environments, and building professional connections. However, recent University of Oregon graduates have a unique advantage: the robust, supportive University of Oregon Alumni Association (UOAA) network.

For many recent graduates, the UOAA is more than just a membership—it’s a gateway to career opportunities, mentorship, and a sense of community as they establish themselves in their post-grad lives. Through events, professional development opportunities, and ongoing alumni engagement, UOAA membership proves to be an invaluable resource.

Two recent graduates, Kayla Choate and Ella Polley, share how their involvement in the UOAA has helped them launch their careers and expand their networks in meaningful ways.

Help UO students become future alumni during Ducks Give

On Thursday, May 15, the UO community will come together to make an impact on the lives of current and future Ducks through the tenth annual Ducks Give.

More than forty-five areas across UO campuses will participate in the annual day of giving, including eighteen of the UO Alumni Association’s chapters and affinity networks. These groups primarily raise funds for scholarships benefiting UO students from their communities.

Over the past ten years, the UOAA has provided more than $1.1 million in scholarships to more than 335 students, offering support on their journey to graduation and beyond. This academic year alone, the UOAA’s scholarship program has benefitted 52 students through over $145,000 in scholarships.

“Alumni chapters and affinity networks raise money in their communities for student scholarships, and the UOAA supports them in these endeavors,” said UOAA Executive Director Raphe Beck. “We match the first $3,000 annually for each scholarship fund to encourage donations to all groups.”

Researchers Develop Better Way to Measure Running Gait Outdoors

As runners increasingly adopt new technologies to monitor their performance, a University of Oregon researcher has developed a simpler, more accurate method for calculating the physical characteristics of walking and running.
Most top-notch gait analysis systems are fairly complex, using video recordings plus multiple devices attached to different body parts. They give good results in controlled settings but are not available outside the lab.
The new approach uses just a single device mounted to the wearer’s lower back to give a detailed picture of performance, making it easier to accurately monitor gait outdoors and on uneven surfaces like trails. It relies on a new data analysis technique developed by research engineer Aida Chebbi in the UO’s Bowerman Sports Science Center and Phil and Penny Knight Campus for Accelerating Scientific Impact.
The advance could have wide-ranging benefits for athletes, for people recovering from injuries and for those fitness enthusiasts. Detailed performance data can help athletes, trainers and coaches understand the impacts of exercises and the status of a person’s physical performance.

Pigeons vs. AI: Should We Ever Replace Doctors With Algorithms?

Artificial intelligence is seeping into nearly every field, including health care. But with the technology’s rise in popularity, some researchers are asking: Just because you can use it, should you?
“We shouldn’t just care about whether AI would have cognitive limitations,” said Ramón Alvarado, an assistant professor of philosophy at the University of Oregon. “We should also care about something that is broader and important to the human and then see what the repercussions of these uses are.”
Alvarado studies the ethics of technology. In his work, he blends two fields of thought: how researchers can use computation in scientific inquiry and the ethical implications of using those computations. Applying AI to health care situations falls at the crossroads of those two interests. Although he agrees AI can be used in medical fields, he cautions against a sweeping shift to replace health care professionals with computers.
A talk by Geoffry Hinton, heralded as the godfather of AI, about radiologists becoming obsolete spurred Alvarado to think about that shift. In the age of AI, Hinton argued, it was a waste to continue training radiologists when AI could take over the job.
But Alvarado pointed out that pigeons are also great at image recognition tasks. And birds are cheaper than computers. So, if someone is willing to replace humans with AI because it is cheaper and more efficient, then they would have to be willing to replace humans with pigeons, too. “But if you are kind of hesitant about replacing humans with pigeons, then you should also be hesitant to replace humans with AI,” he said.

Particle or wave? Getting to the heart of quantum mechanics

Quantum mechanics is a branch of physics that attempts to explain the behavior of matter and energy at their smallest level, down to the size of subatomic particles like electrons, photons and quarks. And at that size, reality is very different from our everyday world.
The quantum world is distinct from the classical world familiar to us because particles in the quantum world exhibit both particle-like and wave-like behavior. This is most easily seen by comparing the results of a double-slit experiment with sand, waves and then quantum particles like electrons.
Electrons exhibit wave-like behavior when no one is looking at which slit they go through. But when a detector is used to observe which opening the electron goes through, the resulting pattern immediately switches to particle-like behavior. The act of looking changes the result, collapsing the quantum wave-function.
Why is that important? That wave-particle duality is at the heart of quantum mechanics, and quantum mechanics is at the heart of nearly all of the modern world’s technology, from cellphones to lasers to medical imaging and quantum computers.
In this video, UO physicist Graham Kribs walks us through the double-slit experiment and gives us a peek into the world of quantum mechanics.

Back at the UO, Geri Richmond reflects on her federal service

After serving four years as undersecretary for science and innovation at the U.S. Department of Energy, chemistry professor Geraldine “Geri” Richmond is back at the University of Oregon’s Eugene campus.
During her absence, Richmond was one of the top science officers in the federal government, overseeing billions of dollars in research spending on some of the nation’s highest science priorities, including quantum computing, clean energy and national security. She will pick up much where she left off, doing research, mentoring undergraduate science students and helping lead COACh, the Committee on the Advancement of Women Chemists, a group she co-founded to help female scientists.
In her own research, Richmond uses laser-based and computational methods to understand the structure and dynamics of liquid surfaces that are relevant to environmental and technological interests. She has taught and conducted research at the UO since 1985.
She recently sat down for an interview with OregonNews to discuss her past federal service as well as the future of government-funded research.

Raphe Beck // EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Do you have a vanity license plate that shows off your Ducks pride? We’re collecting photos of license plates that proudly celebrate the UO, and we’ll feature some of our favorites in an upcoming edition of Shout! For those who live in Oregon, you may have noticed that OSU recently issued a new Beaver license plate. Ugh. Now would obviously be a good time to order your Duck plates if you haven’t already.

Those Duck plates were designed by Nike legend Tinker Hatfield, BArch ’77, who was the last recipient of the UOAA’s Distinguished Alumni Award. Would you like to nominate someone for this award who has attained extraordinary distinction in their chosen field? We’re all ears. As your license plate might say, GODUX!

An SOJC Alum’s Route to Jobs at Disney, Netflix and HBO
“Everything I’ve learned in the SOJC is happening in real life right now,” media studies and cinema studies alum Nolan Biorn ’20 said, referring to his time working in the film industry as a production assistant.
After graduating from the UO School of Journalism and Communication (SOJC), Biorn wriggled his way into the Portland film industry by getting in contact with a friend who knew a few employers. He eventually landed his very first gig as a production assistant for a Jeep commercial and later worked as a background actor for some extra money. While working on those film sets, he continued networking.
“I connected with people, handed them my resume and told them, ‘I don’t want to be a background actor; I want to work in production. So if you know or hear anything, let me know,”’ he said.

Remembering Quacktavious, the pet duck that captured hearts on campus
Over the past two years, current UO students, recent graduates, and Eugene community members have fallen in love with Quacktavious, the beloved pet duck of Jeremy Jackson, class of 2026.

“He wasn’t just mine, he was everyone else’s as well. There are so many people who share memories with him,” Jackson said.

On February 20, the world said goodbye to an adored pet, friend, and iconic campus figure. The passing of Quacktavious came as a surprise to everyone, Jackson included. As word spread, heartfelt posts and messages circulated through social media, and a memorial was held on campus to honor the adopted mascot.

While a duck may not be the most conventional pet, life with Quacktavious became Jackson’s norm. He brought the duck almost everywhere and registered him as an emotional support animal.

“Honestly I think I was his emotional support as well,” Jackson said. “There were days where if I rolled over in bed, he was popping up to see if I’m leaving and I’m like, ‘no, I’m not leaving!”(for more info., refer to the URL below)

Advancing representation in theatre
Olga Sanchez has dedicated her career to creating, directing and teaching theatre that amplifies underrepresented voices. Now a professor at Middlebury College in Vermont, Sanchez says her time in the College of Arts and Sciences’ Theatre Arts doctoral program played a big part in shaping her artistic and academic journey.

“When I went to UO, I already had 20 years of professional experience in theatre — as an actor, director, writer, producer and artistic director in Portland, Oregon,” Sanchez said. “I was ready to make a shift. I wanted to share via higher ed what I’d been working on for decades.”

She said CAS’s Theatre Arts doctoral program was a perfect fit, teaching contemporary theatre focused on representation from Latinx theatre, African American drama, Native American drama and Middle Eastern American drama. What made the program particularly meaningful for Sanchez was its emphasis on the “scholar-maker” model.

“I didn’t have to put aside making art to become an academic. The program encouraged me and my peers to continue creating while developing as scholars,” she said.

Robotic arms could benefit from new UO brain research
Picking up a cup of coffee, flipping a light switch or grabbing a door handle don’t require much apparent thought. But behind the curtain, the brain performs feats to coordinate these seemingly simple hand-to-object motions.

Using functional MRI brain imaging, or fMRI, University of Oregon researchers have unraveled some of the neural circuitry behind these kinds of actions. Their insights, described in a paper published in the journal eNeuro, can potentially be used to improve the design of brain-computer interface technologies, including brain-controlled prosthetic arms that aim to restore movement in people who have lost it.

“While there are already robotic arms or exoskeletons that take signals from brain activity to mimic the motions of a human arm, they haven’t quite met the gracefulness of how our arms actually move,” said study lead author Alejandra Harris Caceres, an undergraduate senior majoring in neuroscience and human physiology. “We’re hoping to figure out how and when the brain integrates different kinds of sensory information to help make this technology better for patients.”

Japan Ducks

Once a Duck, Always a Duck.

Kylie Williams Becomes Knight Campus’ First Bioengineering PhD Graduate
Kylie Williams, an Oregon native with a pioneering spirit, began her scientific journey studying Biochemistry, Biophysics, and Molecular Biology as an undergraduate before becoming a member of the inaugural cohort of Knight Campus Bioengineering PhD students. Throughout her time at the Knight Campus she emerged as a leader— appearing in one of the first TV interviews to introduce the Knight Campus to the public, serving as its inaugural Chris Lee Innovation Fellow, and collaborating with the Lundquist College of Business to create STEM-focused business course. In 2024, Williams defended her thesis on improving recovery outcomes after serious bone injuries, developing implantable sensors to optimize exercise regimens during healing. Now at Penderia Technologies Inc., a Knight Campus spinout, she is advancing this technology for clinical use. Her advisor, Bob Guldberg, describes her as “fearless”—a fitting accolade for the first graduate of the Knight Campus Bioengineering PhD program and the first University of Oregon student to earn a degree in engineering.
We asked Kylie about her about her time in the program, and her next steps.

Creating housing solutions through sustainable mass timber
Increasing access to sustainable, affordable housing is a pressing issue for Oregonians across the state. It’s a challenge that alumnus Mark Fretz has dedicated his career to addressing, bringing a unique, interdisciplinary perspective as both an architect and former health care provider.

Fretz, MArch ’13 (architecture), moved to Oregon from Kansas City as a lieutenant officer with the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps. He and his family fell in love with the state, living in both Central Oregon and the Willamette Valley. When he decided to transition from public health to architecture, the University of Oregon was an obvious choice.

Oregon alumnus turns German degree into a winemaking career in Austria
When Owen McNally, BA ’23, arrived at the University of Oregon, he never imagined that his journey would lead him to a career in winemaking—let alone in Austria.

Originally an architecture major, he decided to change his major to German after a class sparked his interest. A year-long exchange program in Tübingen, Germany deepened his passion for language and culture. After graduating, he gained hands-on experience at a winery in the Willamette Valley before moving to Austria’s Wachau Valley. Today he works as an assistant winemaker for a company called Tegernseerhof.

There, he is involved in nearly every aspect of the business—from planting new stalks, to crushing grapes, bottling and labeling wine, selling it, and more.

Nielsen Breaks School Record in the Mile
EUGENE, Ore. – Oregon junior Wilma Nielsen broke the school record in the mile Saturday at the Dr. Sander Scorcher in New York. Nielsen ran a blistering time of 4:25.89 for a runner-up showing in the elite section of the event, and with the effort, also moved to No. 3 on the all-time collegiate list.

Katelyn Tuohy, now running professionally for adidas, won in 4:25.54. The Dr. Sander Scorcher was contested at The Armory.

“It started kind of fast and I went up to the front,” Nielsen said in a post-race interview. “When the pacer stepped out, I was like ‘I know Katelyn Tuohy is really good.’ I wanted to hang on for as long as I could and I really did. I almost got her so I’m really happy about that time.”

Lanning Wins 2025 Stallings Award
By: Nate Krueger
DALLAS – Oregon football head coach Dan Lanning was announced on Wednesday as the winner of the 2025 Stallings Award, which recognizes outstanding leadership, character and achievement in college football.

In its 14th year, the Stallings Award is named after former college football coach Gene Stallings and celebrates the values he exemplified throughout his coaching career – leadership and compassion. Proceeds from the award go to The Ashford Rise School of Dallas as a tribute to Stallings’ late son, Johnny, who was born with Down syndrome. The Ashford Rise School provides the highest quality early education services to children with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Lanning becomes the first Oregon head coach to win the Stallings Award, after leading the Ducks to the Big Ten championship in their inaugural year in the conference. Lanning and the Ducks achieved the first 13-0 start in program history, earning the No. 1 seed in the College Football Playoff and a berth in the Rose Bowl.

In three seasons as Oregon’s head coach, Lanning has led the Ducks to three straight double-digit win seasons with wins in the Holiday Bowl and the Fiesta Bowl. Lanning is 35-6 in three seasons as head coach, ranking third among active head coaches in both wins and winning percentage during that time.

Lanning will receive the 2025 Stallings Award on May 6, 2025, in Dallas.

Duck Alumni Recruitment Team (DART) seeks volunteers to shape the future of incoming UO students
Since 2012, the Duck Alumni Recruitment Team (DART) has been offering University of Oregon alumni a meaningful way to give back by engaging with prospective students. Through college fairs, receptions, and one-on-one interactions, DART volunteers help provide a personal touch to the college admissions process, offering insights into what makes the UO community unique.

The program is led by Olivia Manwarren, BA ’14 (family and human services), who is based in Texas as a regional admissions counselor. She’s passionate about the impact alumni have on the recruitment process and values the opportunity to work closely with volunteers.

“Taking over the DART program has been a rewarding experience,” Manwarren said. “I grew up in Eugene, so I have a deep love for the UO and Eugene community. I love working with our alumni because they add so much value to our events.”

DART volunteers are particularly needed during key recruiting seasons in the fall and spring. Volunteers engage with high school students at college fairs, host receptions for admitted students, and facilitate one-on-one connections between prospective students and alumni. Their stories help students see the value of attending the UO and ease the stresses of the admissions process.

Andrea Flores, BA ’97 (political science), from the Bay Area, joined the DART program because of her transformational time at the University of Oregon and her commitment to access in education. It was during her time as a student that Flores became involved in college access and mentorship programming for middle and high school students of color. Two decades later, she continues to create pathways for future generations to succeed, both as the parent of a current student and as a DART volunteer.

Sibling scientists and their dog hunt for Oregon’s hidden truffle biodiversity
A wagging tail is the universal sign of one happy dog, especially for rusty golden retriever Rye. It’s his “tell-tail” signal he’s found buried treasure.
But this treasure is no pirate’s booty. Instead, it’s a prized fungus.
In an oak savannah just outside Eugene, Rye picked up on a scent and was digging through a frosted pile of dead leaves and grass. His feather duster of a tail is his own proximity detector, swishing faster the more confident he is. But after clearing a couple of inches of dirt, he looked up at Heather Dawson with a plea. Heather, Rye’s handler, knelt and coaxed him to keep trying. This bounty was unusually deep underground.

Solutions journalism can spur climate action, UO study finds
News stories that highlight potential solutions alongside the harsh realities of climate change can spur people to action — as long as the stories empower readers to see their own role in the solution, a new study by University of Oregon researchers has found.
Solutions journalism is an approach to reporting that not only explains a problem but also emphasizes ways to solve it, while still adhering to core journalism values. For example, a solutions story on the harm from climate change might also highlight a new kind of electric vehicle or the work of a climate activism group as possible ways to mitigate some of the damage.

Year in Photos Shows a Thriving UO

The University of Oregon had a big year in 2024: the investiture of President Karl Scholz, the university’s 19th president. The welcome of the most diverse incoming class in UO history. Students at the Ballmer Institute for Children’s Behavioral Health in Portland taking steps toward becoming the nation’s first child behavioral health specialists.
The university joined the Big Ten Conference and hosted top officials from the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. And the Duck? Well, as always the Duck found new and unforgettable ways to make a splash in front of the camera.

UO Professor Develops AI Career Coach

Last spring Zach Knapp gave his middle school pupils an assignment: have conversations with an artificial intelligence chatbot about possible future careers.

As a technical education teacher at Vale Middle School in Eastern Oregon, Knapp at first wondered if his students were ready for it. Would it make a difference?

“It will,” he says now. “It will make a huge difference. And your kids will thank you for it down the road. I’d almost guarantee it.”

Knapp didn’t just turn his student loose on just any of the many public AI chatbots available online. The students engaged with Sassy, an online career coach developed by a University of Oregon professor and adopted for student use by the state of Oregon.

Sassy — short for Sasquatch, the mythical creature thought to roam Northwest forests — joins the collection of other AI technologies developed by the Journalistic Learning Initiative, a nonprofit organization co-founded by professor Ed Madison that’s committed to empowering students and teachers with educational programs and resources.

Ducks Go to ROSE BOWL!

そのため新年元日に“ROSE BOWL(2014年からCollege Football Playoff Quarterfinal Game)”出場が確定しました!

Test home heralds innovative, greener construction method

In the future, your new home might be delivered by flatpack like an IKEA bookshelf. Instead of a frame of two-by-fours, workers would assemble prefabricated panels that fit together like pieces of a gingerbread house — only much more precisely.
A University of Oregon research and design team has completed construction on a prototype for such a house. They hope it’s a step toward sustainable, efficient and faster alternatives to traditional home construction.
Researchers with the TallWood Design Institute, a collaboration of the UO and Oregon State University, spent two years designing and building the 760-square-foot house made from mass plywood panels manufactured in Oregon by Freres Engineered Wood.

Youth with disabilities to gain employment opportunities

Christopher Murray, a University of Oregon education professor, is facing an opportunity and a challenge unlike any in his 25-year career.
With help from a $10 million U.S. Department of Education grant, he and his project collaborators are trying to revamp the way youth with disabilities, age 18 to 24, prepare for and join the workforce.
Working with community partners that already serve youth, the UO team will develop and implement a model in Lane County, which will then be expanded to two other Oregon regions.

Researchers unravel how a breast cancer gene affects fertility

For those with a family history of breast cancer, BRCA is a household name. Women with a harmful mutation in the BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes have a 60 percent chance of developing breast cancer at some point in their lives, and a many-fold increased risk of developing ovarian cancer. Men with mutations in these genes also have an elevated risk of breast cancer.
BRCA1 patients often face fertility challenges, too, beyond the side effects of cancer treatment. In new research, University of Oregon biologists have uncovered a mechanism by which the BRCA1 gene influences fertility.
