１【情報】Ducks Go to ROSE BOWL!
今シーズンから「BIG 10」に移ったDucksですが、Footballでは、いきなりNCAA１位となりました！ そのため新年元日に“ROSE BOWL（2014年からCollege Football Playoff Quarterfinal Game）”出場が確定しました！
Rose Bowlは、College FootballのBowl Gameとしては最古。1902年のUniversity of Michigan対Stanford Universityの試合が最初で、49対0でMichiganの勝利でした。
UOが初めてRose Bowlに出場したのは1917年で、対戦相手はUniversity of Pennsylvaniaでした。勝敗は14対0で、Ducksの勝利でした。Ducksはこれまで８回Rose Bowlで試合をし、４勝４敗。直近の３回（2012、2015、2020）はいずれも勝利をおさめています。今回も勝利し、勝ち数を伸ばしてもらいたいですね。そして、College Football Playoff Semifinal Gameも勝ち抜いて、１月20日のCollege Football Playoff National Championship Gameで勝利を挙げてくれることを期待しましょう！

Test home heralds innovative, greener construction method
In the future, your new home might be delivered by flatpack like an IKEA bookshelf. Instead of a frame of two-by-fours, workers would assemble prefabricated panels that fit together like pieces of a gingerbread house — only much more precisely.
A University of Oregon research and design team has completed construction on a prototype for such a house. They hope it’s a step toward sustainable, efficient and faster alternatives to traditional home construction.
Researchers with the TallWood Design Institute, a collaboration of the UO and Oregon State University, spent two years designing and building the 760-square-foot house made from mass plywood panels manufactured in Oregon by Freres Engineered Wood.

Youth with disabilities to gain employment opportunities
Christopher Murray, a University of Oregon education professor, is facing an opportunity and a challenge unlike any in his 25-year career.
With help from a $10 million U.S. Department of Education grant, he and his project collaborators are trying to revamp the way youth with disabilities, age 18 to 24, prepare for and join the workforce.
Working with community partners that already serve youth, the UO team will develop and implement a model in Lane County, which will then be expanded to two other Oregon regions.

Researchers unravel how a breast cancer gene affects fertility
For those with a family history of breast cancer, BRCA is a household name. Women with a harmful mutation in the BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes have a 60 percent chance of developing breast cancer at some point in their lives, and a many-fold increased risk of developing ovarian cancer. Men with mutations in these genes also have an elevated risk of breast cancer.
BRCA1 patients often face fertility challenges, too, beyond the side effects of cancer treatment. In new research, University of Oregon biologists have uncovered a mechanism by which the BRCA1 gene influences fertility.

４【編集後記／雑感】
冬になると空気が澄んで、星座がより綺麗に見えますね。幼い頃、最初に宇宙に思いを馳せたきっかけは「ウルトラマン」でした。M78星雲を故郷とし、なぜか１回の変身で３分しか戦えないヒーロー。いまでもウルトラマン・シリーズは続いているようで、現在は56代目となる「ウルトラマン アーク」。初代ウルトラマンは、身長40mで体重は35,000tでした。そしてウルトラマン アークは、身長48mで体重は32,000tで、身長が伸び、体重が減っているので、少しスリムですね。時代でしょうか。
その後、星雲という言葉から、「アンドロメダ星雲」という名前を知りました。しかし、いまは「アンドロメダ銀河」と言います。何が違うのでしょうか。
星雲：ガスやチリで作られた雲のように見える天体のこと。
（そのガスやチリは後に、集まって恒星になる。）
銀河：数百万個から数千億個ほどの恒星が集まった集団のこと。
実はこのアンドロメダ銀河が発見されてから、今年の11月23日で100周年を迎えました。発見したのは、米国の天文学者エドウィン・ハッブルです。それまでは、アンドロメダ星雲と呼ばれていましたが、その天体にハッブルは、多数の恒星を観測したため、以降は星雲ではなく、銀河と呼ばれるようになったのです。
アンドロメダ銀河は、私たちが暮らす太陽系が存在する「天の川銀河」に最も近く、地球からの距離は250万光年の距離にある巨大銀河です。そこには、約1兆個もの星が集まっているそうです。この「アンドロメダ銀河」は、肉眼でも観測できるとのことで、ネットにいろいろと観測の仕方が掲載されているので、みなさんがわかりやすいと感じるサイトを参考になさっては、いかがでしょうか。
これまでもこの編集後記／雑感で幾度か話題にした「ハッブル宇宙望遠鏡（Hubble Space Telescope、略称：HST）」は、このエドウィン・ハッブルに因んで名付けられました。
ちなみに冒頭の「M78星雲」ですが、ウルトラマンの原作では数字が逆で、「M87星雲」だったものが、脚本印刷に際しての誤植で、「M78」になったという話もあります。
この冬、250万年かけて地球に届いているアンドロメダ銀河の光を眺めながら、宇宙に思いを馳せつつ、年の瀬を迎えてはいかがでしょうか。
