１【年頭のご挨拶】
DUCKSの皆様
新年明けましておめでとうございます。
年初はシーズン無敗だったフットボールチームが、ローズボウルで惜しくもオハイオ州立大学に負けてしまいましたが、念願の全米チャンピオンとなる日は刻々と近づいていますね。
さて、世界へ目を向けますと2024年はトランプ大統領の再選、続くロシア・ウクライナ戦争、緊迫が続く中東情勢、台湾情勢、また欧州では初のAI法が制定され、いよいよAIが我々の生活へも身近なものとなってきました。国内では経済の低成長、物価高騰、急がれる少子高齢化への対応、加速するデジタル化への波、我々の世界は、混迷、変革、変化の真っただ中におり、皆さまにおいてもご苦労の多かった1年だったかと存じます。
我々同窓会では、こんな世界を切り開く未来のDucksのリクルーティングを精力的に活動した2024年でした。
オレゴン大学International admissionとも協力し、米国大使館主催の留学フェア、都内インターナショナルスクール、私立高校での留学フェアブース対応、オレゴン大学合格者へのオリエンテーション開催、その他オレゴン大学進学を予定している、もしくは検討されているご本人、ご家族、学校関係者ともお話させて頂く機会がございました。
その中で多くの同窓生の皆さまにお手伝い頂き、大変多くの方々にオレゴン大学をアピールすることができ、世界へ、未来へ挑戦される多くの方々を勇気づけてくださいました。ご協力頂きました皆さま、あらためて感謝申し上げます。
また、9月に開催した同窓会パーティーでは９名の新入生にも参加頂き、年次パーティー以外では昨年は東京渋谷にありますPDX Taproom（オレゴンビールバー）でも少人数での懇親会を定期的に開催し、世代を越えた交流ができましたので、今年も継続していきます。
2025年も、この混迷、変革、変化の時代におけるDucksがどのように、この世界を活かし、世界に活かされて、更なる発展へ貢献していくか、グローバルに広く根をはるDucksが繋がるイノベーションプラットフォームとしての同窓会の価値を更に皆様と共に追求できたらと考えています。
同窓生の皆さま、同窓会理事の運営の皆さまとも、未来志向で新しい時代のDucksがどうあるべきかを議論し、行動していきますので、引き続きのご参画の程、よろしくお願いいたします。
2025年も皆様がDUCKSスピリットをキラキラと輝かせ、チャレンジングで実り多いDuckyな1年となりますことを確信して、年頭のご挨拶とさせて頂きます。
今年も、笑顔でお会いできる事を心より楽しみにしております。

Year in Photos Shows a Thriving UO
The University of Oregon had a big year in 2024: the investiture of President Karl Scholz, the university’s 19th president. The welcome of the most diverse incoming class in UO history. Students at the Ballmer Institute for Children’s Behavioral Health in Portland taking steps toward becoming the nation’s first child behavioral health specialists.
The university joined the Big Ten Conference and hosted top officials from the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. And the Duck? Well, as always the Duck found new and unforgettable ways to make a splash in front of the camera.

UO Professor Develops AI Career Coach
Last spring Zach Knapp gave his middle school pupils an assignment: have conversations with an artificial intelligence chatbot about possible future careers.
As a technical education teacher at Vale Middle School in Eastern Oregon, Knapp at first wondered if his students were ready for it. Would it make a difference?
“It will,” he says now. “It will make a huge difference. And your kids will thank you for it down the road. I’d almost guarantee it.”
Knapp didn’t just turn his student loose on just any of the many public AI chatbots available online. The students engaged with Sassy, an online career coach developed by a University of Oregon professor and adopted for student use by the state of Oregon.
Sassy — short for Sasquatch, the mythical creature thought to roam Northwest forests — joins the collection of other AI technologies developed by the Journalistic Learning Initiative, a nonprofit organization co-founded by professor Ed Madison that’s committed to empowering students and teachers with educational programs and resources.

Olympic Studies Hub Takes Shape at
The University of Oregon has announced the launch of the Olympic Studies Hub at the Lundquist College of Business.
The UO Olympic Studies Hub is the only U.S. member of the worldwide network of academic Olympic Studies and Research Centres dedicated to the study and research of the Olympic movement and Olympic Games. The UO hub has fulfilled the criteria for recognition as an academic Olympic Studies and Research Centre by the International Olympic Committee Olympic Studies Centre.

新年明けましておめでとうございます
本年もUOAAJの活動を楽しくご一緒しましょう
今年も元日に「ウィーンフィル・ニューイヤー・コンサート」がオーストリア・ウィーンで開催。世界90カ国以上で配信され、日本は今年もNHKで放送されました。実はこのコンサート、第一回は元日でなく大晦日でした。
1939年12月31日、当時、ナチス・ドイツに併合されたオーストリア人の不満を抑えるために開催されました。このときのオーストリア社会の様子の一端は、名作映画「Sound of Music」でも感じることができますね。そして一年と一日後、元日の正午に第二回（1941）には「ヨハン・シュトラウス・コンサート」として開催されました。以降、元日の正午開催が定着しました。
そのコンサートで演奏される曲の選定方法は、ヨハン・シュトラウス協会会長やシュトラウス研究家などが候補曲をあげ、当該回の指揮者とウィーンフィルとで決めるようです。もちろんその中核をなす楽曲は、ヨハン・シュトラウス一世・二世親子作曲の作品です。
そしてこのコンサートには、いつも様々な面白い演出があります。過去の例として「ポルカ電話（エドゥアルト・シュトラウス作曲）」では、演奏の終盤に指揮者のポケットの携帯電話の呼び出し音が鳴るなどです。
さらにコンサートの“お約束”となっているのがヨハン・シュトラウス二世作曲のアンコール曲で、『美しく青きドナウ』ですね。この演奏が始まると聴衆は拍手をします。そこで指揮者は演奏を止め、様々なスタイルで新年の挨拶をオーケストラのメンバーとします。そしてその演奏後、一旦舞台の袖に下がった指揮者が再び出てくると、ヨハン・シュトラウス一世作曲『ラデツキー行進曲（op. 228）』が始まります。曲のリズムに合わせたお決まりの聴衆の拍手も、ロリン・マゼール氏が指揮をした時代に、指揮者が聴衆の拍手にきっかけを出すようになったのが始まりのようです。
この『ラデツキー行進曲』が同コンサートで初めて演奏されたのは1946年で、『美しく青きドナウ』の前で、順番が逆だったそうです。いまでは、世界中の様々なコンサートのアンコール曲として、『ラデツキー行進曲』が採用されていますね。そして、今年の「ウィーンフィル・ニューイヤー・コンサート」では、リッカルド・ムーティ氏が７回目の指揮を担当しました。
今年2025年、ヨハン・シュトラウス二世生誕200周年を迎えました。ヨハン・シュトラウス二世の作品を聴く年にしては、いかがでしょうか。
