Yes, I’m a little emotional about Commencement this weekend and all the new Duck alumni in their caps and gowns. Congratulations to all the graduates! But am I crying? No, that’s just spring allergies in Eugene. Please pass the Claritin.
Penn State has declared our game a White Out, which means they will want to cover up the score with White Out, or something like that. There are still seats available on our direct flight charter from Eugene to Harrisburg, and the return flight leaves from Happy Valley right after the game. Let’s flock together. Go Ducks!

Bach Festival Artistic Partners Are Making Beautiful Music Together
History tells us much about Johann Sebastian Bach: He was hard-working, ambitious, stubborn. A gifted organist. Married twice, fathered 20 children. And perhaps the greatest composer of all time.
But history doesn’t tell us precisely how Bach wanted his music played. He gave no elaborate instructions on how his compositions should be performed regarding, for example, instrumentation, tempo or dynamics. Since his death in 1750, it’s fallen to others to present his music from their perspective. To interpret Bach.
The University of Oregon’s Oregon Bach Festival has long distinguished itself in this regard. A program of the School of Music and Dance, the Grammy-winning festival has earned high praise for its Bach-inspired concerts, educational programs and focus on community. It’s been described in media as “virtually without equal in America” and “one of the world’s leading music festivals.”

Fungi Dwelling on Human Skin May Provide New Antibiotics
University of Oregon researchers have uncovered a molecule produced by yeast living on human skin that showed potent antimicrobial properties against a pathogen responsible for a half-million hospitalizations annually in the United States.
It’s a unique approach to tackling the growing problem of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. With the global threat of drug-resistant infections, fungi inhabiting human skin are an untapped resource for identifying new antibiotics, said Caitlin Kowalski, a postdoctoral researcher at the UO who led the study.
Described in a paper published April 14 in Current Biology, the common skin fungus Malassezia gobbles up oil and fats on human skin to produce fatty acids that selectively eliminate Staphylococcus aureus. One out of every three people have Staphylococcus aureus harmlessly dwelling in their nose, but the bacteria are a risk factor for serious infections when given the opportunity: open wounds, abrasions and cuts. They’re the primary cause of skin and soft tissue infections known as staph infections.

Knight Campus Undergraduate Scholars Program Prepares Future Innovators
During her first year at South Eugene High School, Caroline Foskett already was playing soccer with the varsity team. Then she tore her ACL.
It was a long game, Foskett recalled, following a long bus ride toward the end of a busy season. An opponent slide tackled her. Foskett fell, and her knee snapped.
For Foskett, now a junior human physiology major at the UO, it’s a traumatic memory.
But it was also the beginning of a journey that led her to become a Knight Campus Undergraduate Scholar exploring innovative ways to help people recover from injuries.
“We still have a lot to learn about how the body heals itself,” Foskett said. “The way we put things back together through surgery often seems like brute force. If we can simplify treatment and enhance healing outcomes for patients, that’s going to be the way of the future.”

この6月8日、米国フィラデルフィア国際空港（Philadelphia International Airport）を19:20に離陸したアメリカン航空のAA780便が、出発して７時間後、行き先をイタリアのナポリ国際空港（Naples International Airport）から、同国の通称レオナルド・ダ・ヴィンチ国際空港（Rome Fiumicino Airport）に変更しました。その原因は、意外なものでした。
このAA780便は、本来ボーイング787-8型（全長56.6m）を機材として運用しているのですが、当日は787-9型（全長62.8m）を運用しました。両機の全長について、787-9型のほうが約６m長くなっており、このことで70席ほど多く設定できています。
しかし、ボーイング社と国際民間航空機関（ICAO）の文書によると、機材の長さの違いで、離発着する空港に求められる『消火救難体制（RFFS）』の10あるカテゴリが異なるそうです。787-8型だと「カテゴリ８」で良いのですが、787-9型だと「カテゴリ９」の体制が求められます。今回、AA780便の到着地であるナポリ国際空港は「カテゴリ８」であったため、「カテゴリ９」を必要とする（臨時に飛ばした）787-9型が離着陸できなかったのです。
ちなみに、そのカテゴリの主な条件を比較してみましょう：

必要（消火）車両数：3台
必要人員（目安）：8〜10人
[カテゴリ９]
最低消火剤容量：約 16,425 L
必要（消火）車両数：3台以上
必要人員（目安）：10人以上
日本国内では、成田空港10、羽田空港10、新千歳空港9、福岡空港9、富山空港9という具合です。万が一の際、より確実に対応できるように、いろいろな決まりごとの上に安全が確保されているのですね。とはいえ、出発前に787-9型の利用の可否を着陸予定空港に照会し、確認できないまま出発させた航空会社の責任は重いですね。
