１【追悼】沼田元会長お別れ会「Ｊ９３感謝の集い」
「すべては、この鞄から 神戸港から」
そう書かれた一枚の写真に映る、たったひとつの鞄。
そこには、手書きのマジックでこう記されていました。
「1957.11.30 Santons丸 神戸港」
「1957.12.17 SANPEDRO港着」
1957年11月30日、沼田さんはこの鞄ひとつを手に、貨物船に乗り込みました。目指すは、遥か彼方のオレゴン。それが、沼田さんの壮大なアドベンチャーの幕開けでした。
けれど、その旅路は決して平坦ではありませんでした。
船上で体調を崩し、心臓を患い、アメリカの港に着いたときには、入国すら一時は許されなかったといいます。沼田さんは、その後も心臓を患いながらも幾度となく病を乗り越えられ、多くの功績を残し、93歳までその生涯を全うされました。沼田さんのお嬢様は、その軌跡を「奇跡」と語っておられました。
2025年3月。沼田さんは静かに旅立たれました。
そして6月7日、名古屋マリオットアソシアホテルにて開かれた『J93感謝の集い』。それは、「葬儀は家族葬で。後日、友人や知人とお別れの会を」というご本人の生前のご意向に沿い、親交のあった方々への感謝を込めた、温かくも厳かな昼食会となりました。
会の中で上映されたスライドショーは、まさに圧巻でした。
若き日の沼田さんが、オレゴン大学で学ぶお姿。
世界一の自動車メーカーへと成長していくトヨタ自動車の姿。
そのグローバル展開の最前線に立ち、世界のビジネス界・政界とネットワークを築いていく沼田さんの姿。
英国での輸入規制を機に、現地英国工場の立ち上げに奔走された姿。
そして、東海理化の社長・会長を経てからも多くの事業に携わり、晩年には半導体事業にも携わられておられました。最近まで「ZOOMでやっとるよ〜」と、気さくに話されていたその声が、今も耳に残ります。
そして、今年に入り体調を崩され、旅立ちの2週間前にはスーツを新調され、最期の最後まで、目を開き続けておられたとそうです。まさに、人生の最期の最期まで「生涯現役」を貫かれたその姿に、真の“the Ducks’ Spirit”を見ました。
そんな沼田さんの心に常にあったのは、母校University of Oregon。
最後に行きたかった場所はUniversity of Oregon。
いつもUOシャツやマフラーを身に着けておられたそうです。
今、我々は混迷と激動の世界の真っただ中にいます。だからこそ、沼田さんの“the Ducks’ Spirit”を、私たちが受け継いでいくこと。沼田さんの残された偉大な功績を超えて、次の未来を切り拓いていくこと。それこそが、現役DUCKSに託されたバトンであり使命なのだと、私は信じています。

２【訃報】村野宣男様 鎌倉にてご逝去
令和7年4月13日、村野宣男様が鎌倉にてご逝去なさいました。
彼はオレゴン大学での在学は、1964〜1967年までだったでしょうか。専門は哲学でした。彼との思い出は1966年夏に彼を含み数人の仲間と彼の車（オールズモビル）でポートランドに行きアパートを見つけ、各自バイト探しをして一夏過ごしたことです。村野さんが見つけたバイトは洗濯屋でしたが、これがかなりきつい仕事だった様でしたが、頑張りEugeneに帰る迄やり切った事が思い出されます。

UO plans national children’s mental health center with $11M grant
With a new $11 million federal grant, the University of Oregon will create a national center for children’s mental health, putting the university at the forefront of national prevention efforts to improve the mental health and well-being of adolescents.
The center will be housed in the UO’s Prevention Science Institute. It will be funded over the next five years by the National Institute of Mental Health, part of the National Institutes of Health.
“This center will build on the strong work the UO’s Prevention Science Institute has done over decades in the area of school-based mental health prevention, bringing together faculty, community providers and expertise into one cohesive center that supports children’s mental health,” said Beth Stormshak, Philip H. Knight Chair and a professor in the Department of Counseling, Psychology and Human Services in the College of Education.
It will draw from the expertise of more than a dozen faculty members and scores of students from the UO’s Prevention Science Institute, College of Education and the Ballmer Institute for Children’s Behavioral Health.
Launched in 2022, the Ballmer Institute is a one-of-a-kind training program for the next generation of youth mental health professionals. With an undergraduate degree, child behavioral health specialists trained at the Ballmer Institute will help support children in clinics, schools and other community settings.

Trailblazing legal scholar aims to clean up carbon in the sky
Mary Wood is a fifth-generation Oregonian who grew up exploring the Northwest’s natural wonders.
But in her teens, she witnessed the farms, forests and wetlands she remembered from childhood decimated by urban sprawl.
That experience transformed her, bolstering a conviction that the present generation has a duty to conserve for future generations the natural inheritance that is key to human survival and well-being.
After graduating from Stanford Law School, Wood served as a judicial clerk on the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, practiced environmental law, then joined the UO School of Law in 1991.
Her 2014 book “Nature’s Trust: Environmental Law for a New Ecological Age” made the case for a duty to future generations based on the ancient legal principle of public trust. It also introduced a new legal approach called atmospheric trust litigation.
That legal strategy asserts that the atmosphere, like other resources required for human survival, is a public trust resource that the government must protect.

Undergrad hits bonanza with discovery of undersea volcanic ash
Deep below the surface of the ocean, bacteria and critters that feed off nutrients spouting from hydrothermal vents met with a sudden wave of volcanic sediment, leaving them suffocated.
Four months later, Marcus Chaknova, then a marine biology and geology major in the University of Oregon College of Arts and Sciences, stumbled across the massive deposits of ash sediment while on a research cruise with the UO’s Oregon Institute of Marine Biology, the University of Rhode Island and Western Washington University.
Deposited in 2022 when the underwater Hunga volcano spewed a 37-mile plume into the atmosphere—the biggest eruption seen in the modern satellite era—the seafloor ash provided a unique opportunity to study the impact of sediment movement on deep-sea life.
“This was an extremely rare opportunity,” says Chaknova, now a graduate student in the Department of Earth Sciences. “Observing the mass movement of underwater sediment is something that hasn’t been studied much.”
With help from Earth sciences Professor Thomas Giachetti and 16 other researchers from around the world, Chaknova analyzed the samples he collected and is now the lead author on a paper examining the geologic and biologic impacts of the transport of volcanic sediment—a substantial accomplishment for an early graduate student, Giachetti says.

６【編集後記／雑感】
夏になると、日本各地で「花火大会」が催されます。その開催目的は多様ですが、大きく４つに分けることができます：
・死者の慰霊・供養
・夏祭りと連動した地域行事
・夏休みのイベントとして観光誘致
・純粋な“夏の風物詩”
先日のニュースで、毎年8月２・３日に開催される新潟県の「長岡まつり大花火大会」が取り上げられていました。その開催の目的は、ホームページに次のように書かれています：
毎年華やかに繰り広げられる「長岡まつり」。その起源は、長岡の歴史に刻み込まれた、最も痛ましい、あの夏の日に発しています。昭和20年8月1日。その夜、闇の空におびただしい数の黒い影―B29大型爆撃機が来襲し、午後10時30分から1時間40分もの間にわたって市街地を爆撃。旧市街地の８割が焼け野原と変貌し、燃え盛る炎のなかに1,488名の尊い命が失われました。見渡す限りが悪夢のような惨状。言い尽くしがたい悲しみと憤りに打ち震える人々。そんな折、空襲から１年後の昭和21年8月1日に開催されたのが、長岡まつりの前身である「長岡復興祭」です。この祭によって長岡市民は心を慰められ、励まされ、固く手を取り合いながら、不撓不屈の精神でまちの復興に臨んだのでした。
しかし、昨今の「長岡まつり大花火大会」はオーバーツーリズムとなり、路上駐車や有料席チケットの高額な転売など、その開催目的が薄れてきていると主催の長岡花火財団が頭を痛めています。その対策として、同財団は前回、チケットのない人に来訪を控えるよう呼びかける「ネガティブキャンペーン」を「1千万円単位」の予算で首都圏のJR電車内や駅に広告を出しました。（戸田事務局長）
開催目的が上記の「夏休みのイベントとして観光誘致」などでは、毎回大勢の人々が来場することでその目的を達成したと言えるでしょうが、長岡の花火などは「死者の慰霊・供養」そして地元の人々による街の復興が目的です。
これを機に、これからは開催目的や主催者の想いを理解した上で、各行事に参加するべきと感じました。
