Raphe Beck // EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Do you have a vanity license plate that shows off your Ducks pride? We’re collecting photos of license plates that proudly celebrate the UO, and we’ll feature some of our favorites in an upcoming edition of Shout! For those who live in Oregon, you may have noticed that OSU recently issued a new Beaver license plate. Ugh. Now would obviously be a good time to order your Duck plates if you haven’t already.
Those Duck plates were designed by Nike legend Tinker Hatfield, BArch ’77, who was the last recipient of the UOAA’s Distinguished Alumni Award. Would you like to nominate someone for this award who has attained extraordinary distinction in their chosen field? We’re all ears. As your license plate might say, GODUX!

An SOJC Alum’s Route to Jobs at Disney, Netflix and HBO
“Everything I’ve learned in the SOJC is happening in real life right now,” media studies and cinema studies alum Nolan Biorn ’20 said, referring to his time working in the film industry as a production assistant.
After graduating from the UO School of Journalism and Communication (SOJC), Biorn wriggled his way into the Portland film industry by getting in contact with a friend who knew a few employers. He eventually landed his very first gig as a production assistant for a Jeep commercial and later worked as a background actor for some extra money. While working on those film sets, he continued networking.
“I connected with people, handed them my resume and told them, ‘I don’t want to be a background actor; I want to work in production. So if you know or hear anything, let me know,”’ he said.

Remembering Quacktavious, the pet duck that captured hearts on campus
Over the past two years, current UO students, recent graduates, and Eugene community members have fallen in love with Quacktavious, the beloved pet duck of Jeremy Jackson, class of 2026.
“He wasn’t just mine, he was everyone else’s as well. There are so many people who share memories with him,” Jackson said.
On February 20, the world said goodbye to an adored pet, friend, and iconic campus figure. The passing of Quacktavious came as a surprise to everyone, Jackson included. As word spread, heartfelt posts and messages circulated through social media, and a memorial was held on campus to honor the adopted mascot.
While a duck may not be the most conventional pet, life with Quacktavious became Jackson’s norm. He brought the duck almost everywhere and registered him as an emotional support animal.
“Honestly I think I was his emotional support as well,” Jackson said. “There were days where if I rolled over in bed, he was popping up to see if I’m leaving and I’m like, ‘no, I’m not leaving!”(for more info., refer to the URL below)

Advancing representation in theatre
Olga Sanchez has dedicated her career to creating, directing and teaching theatre that amplifies underrepresented voices. Now a professor at Middlebury College in Vermont, Sanchez says her time in the College of Arts and Sciences’ Theatre Arts doctoral program played a big part in shaping her artistic and academic journey.
“When I went to UO, I already had 20 years of professional experience in theatre — as an actor, director, writer, producer and artistic director in Portland, Oregon,” Sanchez said. “I was ready to make a shift. I wanted to share via higher ed what I’d been working on for decades.”
She said CAS’s Theatre Arts doctoral program was a perfect fit, teaching contemporary theatre focused on representation from Latinx theatre, African American drama, Native American drama and Middle Eastern American drama. What made the program particularly meaningful for Sanchez was its emphasis on the “scholar-maker” model.
“I didn’t have to put aside making art to become an academic. The program encouraged me and my peers to continue creating while developing as scholars,” she said.

Robotic arms could benefit from new UO brain research
Picking up a cup of coffee, flipping a light switch or grabbing a door handle don’t require much apparent thought. But behind the curtain, the brain performs feats to coordinate these seemingly simple hand-to-object motions.
Using functional MRI brain imaging, or fMRI, University of Oregon researchers have unraveled some of the neural circuitry behind these kinds of actions. Their insights, described in a paper published in the journal eNeuro, can potentially be used to improve the design of brain-computer interface technologies, including brain-controlled prosthetic arms that aim to restore movement in people who have lost it.
“While there are already robotic arms or exoskeletons that take signals from brain activity to mimic the motions of a human arm, they haven’t quite met the gracefulness of how our arms actually move,” said study lead author Alejandra Harris Caceres, an undergraduate senior majoring in neuroscience and human physiology. “We’re hoping to figure out how and when the brain integrates different kinds of sensory information to help make this technology better for patients.”
